Gita for Toddlers by Riddhi Khaitan for 5 years+ (46 pages – thick board book). Sritama has shared her review and an inside page here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts:
“I read it aloud to my mother and my 5.5 year old daughter, Aadya and frankly speaking, all of us just loved it. By omitting the violence and also going into too much details, the author has highlighted important values and also imparted a sense of safety in the young minds. In case of children’s books, a good story is not complete without its illustrations and I must say in this case, the illustrator deserves as much praise as the author. The teachings and verses would not have been fully understood if not for the splendid illustrations.
Aadya liked the beautiful explanations and the illustrations. She liked the fact that the Sanskrit verses have been translated into English for her to understand.”
PICTURE BOOKS
New Baby and I by Vaishali Shroff for 3 years+ (36 pages). Preethi Joseph who ordered this book, a day before going into labour has shared her heartwarming post announcing the arrival or her second baby and how the book helped her! Excerpts from her post in the kbc fb group:
“My second baby- a baby boy arrived less than a fortnight ago.. Now Vijay is a big brother to little Sanjay… With the new baby arrival, a lot of family dynamics have been altered and its led to some little big feelings..
The book ‘New Baby and I: Does Mommy still love me?’ arrived after I was back from hospital… So I told my first-born that its a gift from his baby brother. He wanted to read it immediately (probably because the baby & I were just getting to bond and V’s night routine of reading one or two books with me was on the fence). We read it together when the baby was sleeping and I could spend some quality one-on-one time with Vijay. I’m so glad I did.
I asked him if he felt like the protagonist and if he wonders if mumma still loves him? He admitted he felt like that on the initial two days (when we were at the hospital) but now he knows mumma loves both of them.
We three read the book again the same night. My favourite moment – later on, I heard him whispering to the little one, “You are so tiny and so you are the tiny cupcake. I’m so big and I’m the big cupcake.” I almost had tears.
Now we are almost back to V’s routine of bedtime readings. On the nights we are unable to read, he brings me a book the next day after school. I am really amazed at his adaptability and resilience.
If you are expecting your second child or if you have a new baby at home and your elder one is navigating big feelings, then this is a MUST-HAVE. It’s not just a book. It’s a big, big cupcake of a book.”
Bad Artist by Simone Kung for 4-8 years (36 pages). You can read Abha’s detailed review on this website.
About the book: Little Lou believes she’s a “bad artist” because her drawings don’t look as realistic as her big sister’s. But with a little perspective, she discovers that creativity isn’t about getting it right–it’s about the joy of making your mark.
From an experienced art teacher, this is a book to liberate young artists from perfectionism, teaching them that true art is about joyful expression and a unique perspective.
