This book has been thoroughly enjoyed by both my 5 year old and 9 year old smartypants!

Do you have a very inquisitive child who is always asking very pertinent questions!! Well in that case, you must look up this series called Smartypants

My boys have always been obsessed with this invisible force called gravity since they were very tiny. To understand the very concept, I remember once I was asked why the ball falls down when we throw it up. I told them it is because of gravity but just saying that was not enough to convince them. Well thankfully now Smartypants is here to help!

If you are wondering who is smartypants let me tell you, it is a cat! And the book beautifully explains gravity to this curious cat which makes it so interesting for the kids. Gravity is that force which keeps things in place. We can’t see it but it is present everywhere. If it was not for gravity you and me would have been floating around. Yes that would have been fun but don’t you think it would get a little boring beyond a point.

The book has explained the very concept of gravity in the most simple terms for little ones. What is gravity and what are the factors that define the force is explained with the help of examples from our surroundings. Matter (or mass or let’s call it weight for simplicity) is what matters in case of defining the gravitational force. It is this force which keeps us on the ground, which keeps the planets in their orbits, keeps the earth going around the sun and keeps the moon from falling down.

Our important takeaways from the book are –

  1. Gravity is the invisible force that keeps things in their place
  2. It depends on the mass of the two objects. The more the mass, the more is the gravitational pull between two objects
Matter or Mass is most important

The illustrations are absolutely amazing and will surely make you fall in love with smartypants instantly. They definitely help in visualizing the whole concept because pictorial representations always stay back in mind. The size of the book is an added advantage because you can simply carry it in anywhere and can become great travel companions. There are more books in this Smartypants series and am sure they would be equally interesting.

ADDED BY ASHA: Cell Theory for Smartypants is another book in this series that Achira has reviewed in the kbc facebook group and has shared inside pages here. Excerpts from her conversation with her 7yo:

“What is a cell? Are they living beings like us? Why do we need them? Can we see them just with our eyes? Ohh they also have different parts like parts of the body! Ahaa so I get it now- cells are the smallest Lego blocks that make up big things. So we are made of many cells and each one of them have a particular job to do! How cool mumma! And guess what..they have a mumma too- the nucleolus is like their mom who guides them to do the right thing!

Yes this book can actually be that eureka moment for our little ones who can get totally charged up when they find a book that literally answers all their questions. And guess what! You will learn all about cells, cell membrane and what is inside them- the cytoplasm, the mighty mitochondria, chloroplast the cooks and Golgi bodies the garbage collectors in the most fun way with smartypants.

We absolutely love the way the book explains cell theory to our budding science lovers. I am sure this concept will remain with Adu as he dives into learning all this through school textbooks. Science can be made so much fun when you have just the required amount of information explained through diagrams in the simplest way. Highly recommend this series for all the curious minds between 5-7 years.”
