Title: Amal Rides the Rails
Author: C.G. Salamander
Illustrated by: Habib Ali
Published by: Scholastic India
Type: Paperback
Length: 30 pages
Age recommendation: 4-6 years

A part of the ‘Tiny Tales’ Early Reader Series, ‘Amal Rides the Rails’ is a nostalgic journey down memory lane for many of us. We chug along to join Amal who is boarding the train with his parents.

C.G. Salamander tells the story of young Amal who embarks on his first train journey. He enjoys buying treats and comics at the station and settles in for the ride. Amal dislikes wearing his glasses and takes them off immediately. But it’s these glasses that really save the day!!

You have read this fun story to find out how!!

Set to a gentle rhythmic scheme, the words are easy to recognise. The sentences are short and boost a young reader’s confidence. The relatable Indian setting is especially engaging.

My 5 year old son, Siddhanth was thrilled to be able a read the book with no assistance. He enjoyed the simple story and the illustrations. He also enjoyed the fun activity at the end of the book!

Habib Ali’s vibrant and colourful illustrations bring the pages alive! His attention to detail, especially the depiction of Amal’s blurry vision is commendable.

If you have an early reader at home, this book is sure to be a firm favourite and will ‘train’ them to become more confident readers!

The time Sukhi’s parents forgot his birthday!

Tiny Tales: Sukhi’s Surprise by C.G. Salamander. Aditi has reviewed the book in the kbc fb group here and has shared inside pages as well.

This is a very unique story and something I myself always wondered about as a child. Sukhi, a little Sikh boy (I mention this because I was so happy to introduce Sukhi and some of his friends wearing the Sikh turban to my little boy), wakes up on a day he believes to be his Birthday!! However, everyone’s inaction at both home and school proceeds like any other normal day. Neither are there wishes nor are there gifts from either his parents or friends. Sukhi is angry, hurt and completely troubled!! Why would everyone do this to him?

Even my son Kiaan was getting upset – why aren’t they celebrating Ma??

And then we get to know that Sukhi was born on a leap year!!! We were both thinking of different endings to the story but this came as a total surprise!

I absolutely loved the way it introduces the concept of a leap year to kids. I explained the earth’s revolution to Kiaan and the actual time taken for it which leads to a leap year. The story is set in a family which resides in Ludhiana, Punjab and one can see a tiny map of India with Ludhiana marked on it on the back cover. Kiaan has visited Chandigarh so was excited to learn that Sukhi stays quite nearby!!

The text is rhyming adding to the fun factor and these books are very good with the just the right amount of text and easy words for early independent readers.

The illustrations help the story move forward. And there’s a nice little maze at the end which Kiaan finished in a jiffy!!

A perfect story for WHAT IF…

Tiny Tales Reader Series: Frank Goes To The Market by C.G. Salamander.
Nikita Chokhani’s has reviewed this book in the kbc fb group and shared inside pages here. Excerpts from her review:

“The book focuses on how kids observe and remember each and everything you say and do.

Frank, a little boy, goes to the market with mommy. Like any other parent, mommy warns Frank not to wander off in the busy market and stay right close to her. Well kids being kids, he does get lost. What follows is how he navigates his way back to his mommy while simply remembering what mother said to him in the beginning.

The book is like a rollercoaster in the middle where Frank is searching for mommy everywhere. My heart just stopped for a second and wondered WHAT IF…

All in all, a serious situation written in a simple story that reminds you to prepare your young kids for what if moments that could also happen to them.

My son Arth enjoyed the search for mum part the most. He sighed and blurted an Aww when Frank found his mum. There is a little activity at the end of the book which is a bonus I feel.”
