Here is a review by my 12 year old daughter, Ayesha.

The Whispering Mountains is a captivating collection of Himalayan folktales authored by Namita Gokhale and Malashri Lal. This book is a treasure box of timeless stories that have been passed down through generations, echoing the rich cultural heritage of the Himalayan region. With its enchanting narratives and breathtaking illustrations, the book invites readers to explore the mystical world of the mountains, where nature, magic, and humanity intertwine.

Overview
The book comprises a series of folktales that reflect the wisdom, humour and traditions of the Himalayan communities. Each story is a telescope into the lives of the people who inhabit this majestic region, showcasing their connection with nature and their belief in the supernatural. The tales are filled with clever characters, unexpected twists, and moral lessons, making them both entertaining and thought-provoking.

There are a total of 30 folk tales on various topics like nature, shapeshifters, ghosts, goblins, spirits, etc from various regions like Sikkim, Bhutan, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Kashmir, Manipur and many more. Out of these, my favourite was Akanandun- a story of unconditional love and commitment to a wish granted by a sage followed by a test passed by loved ones. Another interesting story was “How the rainbow came to be” – a story of betrayal, remorse and friendship and how a headband turned into a rainbow.

Themes
1. Nature and Humanity: The stories highlight the relationship between humans and the natural world. Trees, flowers, animals, and birds play significant roles, often acting as guides or protectors.
2. Magic and Mystery: Magic is a recurring element, with shapeshifters, hidden realms, and creation myths adding a sense of wonder to the narratives.
3. Wisdom and Folly: The tales often feature clever women, outwitting thieves or fools revealing unexpected wisdom, emphasizing the value of intelligence and resourcefulness.

Writing Style
The authors have employed a simple yet evocative writing style that makes the book accessible to readers of all ages. The language is easy to understand, yet it captures the beauty and mystique of the Himalayan region. The vivid descriptions and engaging dialogues bring the stories to life, making readers feel as though they are sitting by a fire, listening to these tales being narrated.

Illustrations
One of the standout features of the book is its stunning illustrations. The artwork complements the stories perfectly, adding depth and visual appeal. The illustrations capture the essence of the Himalayas, from its towering peaks to its serene rivers, enhancing the reader’s experience.

Strengths
Cultural Insights: The book provides a glimpse into the traditions and beliefs of the Himalayan communities, making it a valuable resource for those interested in folklore and anthropology.
Engaging Narratives: The stories are well-crafted, with intriguing plots and memorable characters that keep readers hooked.
Universal Appeal: While rooted in Himalayan culture, the themes and lessons of the tales are universal, resonating with readers from all backgrounds.

The grand look of this book deserves a special mention. Samar Bansal and Dennis Laishram have done an outstanding job in making the cover page attracting the readers and urging them to read. As soon as I lay my hands on them I was tempted to finish the book at one go. Hats off.
