Book Title: playthings: toys of terror
Author: Neil D’Silva

Format: Paperback

This book is written by Neil D’Silva – master of horror stories and published by Puffin. During the pandemic, I remember shooting questions to him in one of his Instagram lives. He patiently addressed it very sweetly. Those were the times I never let any spooky books set foot in my house. How time flies… when I muster up the courage to read a horror book, I find myself with one of his books.

No spoiler. Here is an adumbration of the book…

This eerie book could not have come at a better time. This season is a great amalgamation of scary Halloween and joyous Christmas. It feels thrilling to cosy up in a corner all set to delve into this spooky read. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Neil D’Silva never does. This is a compelling book with a chilling plot that is filled to the brim with horror.

The story is about Karun, a seventeen-year-old, who suspects that his childhood toy, a clown named Jokko, is out to get him. Jokko used to be an innocuous clown doll during Karun’s childhood but slowly and secretly changed sentient. Even after Karun tried to throw it away, it kept making its way back attacking him every night. Running for his life, he asks the fearless four, a paranormal investigation agency run by four doughty youngsters, to help. Anvita, Tiana, Riz, and Palash run the agency. As they slowly dig deep into the case, they uncover a more sinister plan. More vengeful toys are brought to life by a demon. Each fragment of the demon’s soul is placed in each toy and they start attacking their owners and turning them into living zombies.

How they tackle it is a spine-chilling tale for you to read and find out. This spooky story will appeal to youngsters who are drawn to unexplained twists and all things foreboding. This will captivate young readers. I would recommend it for children over 10 years.
