Sonia Mehta has been a favourite author in our home for a very long time. Her books about Yuki, Winky, and Alabaloo have been read countless times, so getting the opportunity to review one of her chapter books was the icing on the cake.

On Air with RJ Rini is the story of Rini Rao, a lively girl who lives in Mumbai’s Sunshine Colony. Rini loves talking and sharing interesting facts with everyone around her. Unfortunately, nobody seems to have the time to listen. Her parents are busy, her grandmother is occupied with her prayer beads, and her elder sister, Ambika, is usually lost in her headphones.

One day, Rini overhears Ambika listening to the famous RJ Roopa. Captivated by the RJ’s voice and the way she connects with her listeners, Rini discovers a dream of her own—to become a radio jockey. But there’s a catch. Rini’s best friend, Uma, is not thrilled about this new ambition. The two girls have always planned to start their detective agency, Eagle Eye Investigations, together. Uma feels hurt and left out when Rini begins imagining a different future. Will Rini and Uma find a way to stay friends? Can Rini follow her dream without leaving her best friend behind? And will she ever get the chance to become an RJ? You’ll have to read the book to find out!

I enjoyed how Sonia Mehta weaves together themes of friendship, sibling relationships, family dynamics, and the courage to pursue your dreams. The story is warm, relatable, and full of humour.

Here is my 8 year old daughter Ananya’s review

“I liked this book because it is funny and interesting. The main character, Rini, loves talking all the time. She talks to her mirror, her plants, and even a toaster!

I thought that was very funny. One day, Rini learns about radio and dreams of becoming an RJ. I liked how she never gave up on her dream. My favourite part was when she found people who wanted to listen to her. It made me happy.

The story is easy to read, and the colourful cover is very attractive”
