A Dog Named Bob and a Cat Named Kit is a beautiful book and our first Tota book.

The book is about a monkey who eats a lot of jamuns and falls ill. The whole story is about the discovery and recovery of this monkey.

The book can be used to teach different trees it talks about. I loved the idea of falling ill with a fruit. Don’t get me wrong. I feel that this brings home a beautiful message that even good things, if had in unhealthy amounts, would cause us discomfort. In fact, it also teaches us not to be greedy.

Summer always is about mangoes and I can see my daughter’s love for the fruit. When I wish to remind her that it’s too much mango for the day, it is easier to say “Are you being Sundar the Bandar?”

I have done this multiple times this season. The fun part is that she listens to this sometimes with a smile, sometimes with a whine or a protest. But do you see how I don’t become the nagging mom and none of the people around me can guess what we are talking about? It’s a win-win situation.

This book has made me navigate the mango season easily.

I went to my hometown this summer and read this story to my 2 year old nephew and niece. They loved imitating the monkey in pain. We would “read” the story to them through the illustrations. This is a compliment to the illustrator, Aanchal Lodhi.

I see picture books as conversation starters with kids. This book helped me connect with the all the kids in my life from the age 2 to 8 and I loved that it became such a versatile book.
