In the array of mythology books available for children, Wonder House’s latest ‘5 minute Vedic Stories for Kids’ is a stellar stand out! It’s a collection of 20 short stories, each of which answers a question on the Hindu rituals.
While most mythology books just rehash well-known stories, this book focuses on addressing the kids’ inquisitive minds- focusing on answering the why, what and who! For example, why is Hanuman red in colour? Or Why is Shiva’s neck blue?
The author, Dr. Shrilleka Hada has re-told these stories in a crisp and interesting manner which will pique the curiosity of the young minds and initiate further conversation on the scriptures. I also liked the fact that multiple mythological stories have been selected and narrated in a crisp and lucid manner.
There are quite a few stories which were new to us and my 5 year old Siddhanth was intrigued to hear about them! We enjoyed reading about the origin of Rudraksha and Sid thrilled to know that the mighty Monkey God, Hanuman also “attended school”!
With bright and playful illustrations to perfectly complement the stories, this book is an engaging way to introduce Hindu mythology and philosophy to the kids.
The language is easy to understand and the nugget of information at the end of story was interesting! For example, did you know that it was Sage Agastya who introduced Tamil grammar and developed the martial arts form, Kalaripayattu?
Some of the mythology stories did throw up more ‘philosophical’ questions from Sid – on why did Gods deceive the demons to defeat them? Were harsh punishments of extreme measures necessary to punish a mildly mischievous asura?
Those are questions that will spark a discussion for another day.
My verdict: Don’t even wait for 5 minutes to order ‘5 minute Vedic Stories for Kids’ from Amazon (kbc affiliate link) !!
Disclaimer: Sureka, Abha, and Sowmya won this book as a prize in one of the WonderHouseWedenesdaysOnKBC contests from the publisher via kbc.
