Stinkypur Guardians is a beautifully written story that follows two young girls, Jhalak and Nami. Set in Nala Park – a well known neighborhood park that is home to several bird species. While the park is frequented by walkers and children at play, an unmaintained canal running through it carries garbage and filth leaving the area unpleasantly odorous. The children jokingly refer to it as their “Stinkypur Kingdom”.
The book is based on the true story of Jadav Payeng, who lives in the village of Majuli in Assam. He pleaded with the forest department to plant trees there, but they were not interested, and instead handed him a bag of bamboo seeds.
