Author Nalini Ramachandran comes up with yet another outstanding book about Hindu mythology. This book is about the azure blue-hued deity, Vishnu and his Dashavataras! Known as the great Preserver of the Universe, each of the avataras appeared on earth to defeat evil and emancipate humanity.

The book starts with a playful introduction by Maha Vishnu – it gently introduces the young readers to Vishnu and deeper concepts of Hindu philosophy like Advaita, conscience and existence. The author’s wonderful writing style eases you into the origin of the world as well as the power of chanting Vishnu’s name.

Each avatara follows the evolution of life on earth – the aquatic amphibians (Matsya), the sturdy reptiles (Kurma), forest animals (Varaha), the human-animal hybrids (Narasimha) and finally the humans (Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Krishna and Kalki). Each avatara symbolises valour and strength while encouraging mortals to follow the path of dharma.

Each avatara starts with the story along with the more nuanced philosophical interpretations for the older readers. Interesting snippets of information are woven into the stories to create a fantastic re-telling of the tales. We all grew up listening to simplified versions of the Dashavataras (most popular ones that are celebrated are that of Rama and Krishna). I really enjoyed learning the symbolism behind the various stories as well learning about the story of Balarama and the prophecy of Kalki. It was wonderful to see how the author encourages us to ‘look inwards’ and cultivate virtues displayed by the Dashavataras. For example, Rama lives within us as ‘harmony between humans and wildlife’ and Vamana teaches us that every little step can make great strides.

Nalini Ramachandran’s writing is sagacious and lyrical transporting the reader into a realm of spiritual bliss. Her rich descriptive words really bring the stories alive. Do grab this book to read how the author poetically describes Vishnu of the various shades of blue.

The author’s deep dive into the depths of Vaishnava philosophy is commendable. What truly amazes me about Nalini Ramachandran’s books is her approach to tackling complicated layered concepts of Hindu philosophy and presenting them across lucidly for young readers to imbibe. The books are spiritually rejuvenating for all readers of all ages. Siddhanth loved to hear about how Vishnu created Brahma (he giggled at the ‘popping’ of Brahma’s 4 heads) and was intrigued to learn about the name of Vishnu’s mace! The author has beautifully elaborated about the rich symbolism in Hinduism – did you know that Vishnu’s four hands suggest his glory spread in four directions? Do you know about the five different from flowers in his Vaijayanti garland?

Each chapter ends up with a local folklore from India which celebrates the Dashavataras. Did you know about the story of Chenchu Lakshmi who weds Narasimha? We are also introduced to local folk arts like the Puthichitro of Assam and Pichwai of Rajasthan.

A special mention to the incredible artwork by Rajesh Nagulakonda. Each colourful illustration is brimming with intricate details and really lend a divine aura to the pages.

The book ends with the author deftly connecting how each avatara preserved nature and encourages young readers to help save the earth too!

A 10/10 for this glorious book that deserves to be read and celebrated. I’m so happy that we got a chance to read and truly imbibe what the Dashavataras stand for – they are not mere religious forms but they are the beacons of righteousness which will guide generations to come!
