Title: Diary of a Dinoghost: Unlikely Friends (A Branches book)
Author: Monica Arnaldo
Publisher: Scholastic
Format: Paperback
Length: 96 pages
Recommended Age group: 5 to 8 years

Storyline:

Cobble was a dinosaur who had died when an asteroid had hit the Earth. Now, he is the Earth’s one and only dinoghost who has lost track about the number of days that had passed since he had passed away. So to keep a track, he decides to keep a diary where he numbers the days and notes down his daily activities.

Most of the time Cobble likes to hang out at Kevin’s place. Kevin is a seven year old boy who likes to put ketchup on everything. When his parents gift him a goldfish called Bonny on his birthday, he accidentally kills it. Now, Bonny has become a ghost too and according to the ghost rules, he seems to be forever trapped in his fish bowl. Will Cobble be able to help him? This book tells us the story about how Bonny and Cobble become unlikely friends.

What we liked the most:

• The book is written in the form of a journal and is fast paced. The story has been narrated in a humorous way.
• Though the main character, Cobble, is a ghost, instead of feeling uncomfortable, young readers will feel amused and start loving him.
• The main theme of the book is friendship. It throws light on the fact that in times of crisis, a true friend can go to great lengths to help the other friend.
• My 5 year old daughter, Aadya, loved Cobble and the book so much, that she has recently started keeping a journal of her own. That is the power of a good book!

ADDED BY ASHA: This series is part of Scholastic’s early chapter book line, Branches, aimed at newly independent readers. With easy-to-read text, high-interest content, fast-paced plots, and illustrations on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and stamina. Branches books help readers grow! Our kbc children adore BRANCHES books (especially PRESS START, UNICORN DIARIES series – review in this curated post.) and recommend them for 6-8 years (5-8 years for advanced readers, which most of our members happen to be!). Branches books are for children who have just transitioned from the ACORN series and are eager to read easy chapter books!
