My Nest is The Best by Niyatee Sharma for 4-10 years. Sowmya has shared some lovely inside pages here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts from her review:
“Niyatee Sharma’s latest book is a tweet-astic non-fictional tale of our feathery friends.
The book introduces the nesting habits of various birds: a stitched nest, an edible nest, a tunnel nest and a floating nest are some of the fascinating types we learn about.
We learn about over 15 birds which have unique nest building patterns and techniques.
Whether it’s amazing woven basket nests of the Baya Weaver birds or floating nests of the Sarus crane, it was an eye-opening and enlightening read.
Niyatee Sharma’s deep dive into the world of ornithology is wonderfully brought to life by the realistic, watercolor artwork of Sushama Durve.
Each page has a crisp introduction to the bird’s nest set to a gentle rhyming scheme. A more detailed account of the bird and its habitat and nest follows. The illustrations are a visual delight and we could spend hours flipping through the vibrant illustrations.
Siddhanth really enjoyed learning about some of the unique nests and lovely illustrations. He was particularly amused that the Edible Nest Swiftlet used its own saliva to fortify its nest.
The icing on the cake was attending the book reading session and meeting the author, Niyatee Sharma herself!
Sid was awestruck because he has never met a “real-life author” before ![]()
If your kiddo is a nature-lover or you would like to introduce a bit of nature non-fiction in the barrage of fiction, this book promises to make you as happy as a lark!”

Tiny Tales Reader Series: Frank Goes To The Market by C.G. Salamander (32 pages). This book and other books in the Tiny Tales Reader series can be ordered from Scholastic India via our kbc storefront as well. Scholastic India always has special offers on.
Nikita has reviewed this book in the kbc fb group and shared inside pages here. Quoting her: “The book focuses on how kids observe and remember each and everything you say and do.
Snippet: Frank a little boy goes to the market with mommy, like any other parent mommy warns Frank not to wander off in the busy market and stay right close to her. Well kids are kids, he did get lost and how he navigated back to his mommy while just remembering what mother said to him in the beginning and sticking back the pieces in the moments when he was devastated.
The book is like a roller coster in the middle where Frank is searching for mommy everywhere, my heart just stopped for a second and wandered what If… A serious situation written in a simple story reminds you to prepare your young kids what if it does happen…..
Arth enjoyed the search for mum part the most. He sighed and blurted an Aww when Frank found his mum. There is a little activity at the end of the book which is a bonus I feel.”
Summers With Dadu for 4-8 years (24 pages) published by Tota Books. Abha has shared her review and inside pages here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts: “A Tender Tale of Love, Loss, and Healing
In this deeply moving story, we are invited into the world of Anand, a young boy whose summers are filled with laughter, warmth, and the comforting presence of his beloved Dadu. Their days together are woven with simple joys: shared meals of pooris, yummy mangoes and fresh milk, nightly storytelling under starlit skies, and gentle rituals that speak of a deep, intergenerational love.
At the heart of the story is a tender detail—Dadu telling Anand that after people die, they become stars in the sky. It’s a beautiful metaphor that takes on poignant meaning as the story progresses.
One summer, however, Anand arrives to find that Dadu is no longer there. The absence is heavy, confusing, and painful. For a child, the loss of such a cherished figure is incredibly difficult to understand. The story doesn’t shy away from this grief; instead, it holds space for it. We walk with Anand through his sorrow and the unfamiliar silence left in Dadu‘s place.
What makes this book especially powerful is the gentle guidance of Ajji, Anand’s grandmother. Her quiet strength becomes a source of comfort—not just for Anand, but for readers who may be walking through similar loss.”

Saaz’s Search by Mamta Nainy for 4-8 years (24 pages)
The Adventures of Brownie for 4-8 years (24 pages) – Tejaswi has shared her review and inside pages here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts:
“Our little dog brownie here shares his thoughts in this book, which we humans generally don’t have access to. Thanks to our author!! This Dairy of Brownie if filled with pride, where Brownie takes up a self given role of starting the day for some with his great appearance, watering the plants (with pee, hehe), accompanying people in the park on walks and much more and assumes his meal to be the reward. Fair enough, but the squirrel who has an eagle’s view, surely has a different opinion and intervenes to burst Brownie’s bubble. Brownie is not bothered by squirrel’s comments and continues his day joyfully. Brownie’s unmoved attitude has much to tell, as long as there’s no harm done, a little pride isn’t so bad after all!
This humorous tale of Brownie, squirrel and the compassion of people is sure to make any shelf more fun.”

The Scent of Roses (hOle Book): by Adithi Rao – Story of a Young Boy Dealing with Loss | Set in Kashmir | Ages 7+. Sowmya has shared a detailed review with an inside page here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts:
“This book a poignant addition to the books that help children grasp the difficult concept of the loss of loved ones.
A pall of gloom clouds Sajad’s mind ever since his Abu was whisked away in a jeep and ‘disappeared’ into the night. There are other young children like him, who have been deeply impacted by missing family members. The author beautifully highlights the role of a cheery and supportive school teacher, Ustadji who not only teaches academics but also struggles to preserve the innocence and joy of the young Kashmiri children.
Sajad hears of an urban legend, Bram Bram Chok, a dark wolf who incinerates people with his fiery eyes. Sajad’s anguish and angst takes the form of this feral creature and he starts lashing out at his family and friends.
Sajad’s grandfather manages the family business of manufacturing rose water and after Abu’s disappearance, the heavy mantle of carrying forward the legacy falls on Sajad’s fragile shoulders. A line that deeply resonated with me was when Bade bub (Sajad’s grandfather) says ‘Go wherever you want to. Remember, wherever you go, there will be life’.
The highlight of the story has to be Adithi Rao’s richly descriptive words which capture the barbed beauty of Kashmir. The story showcases the plethora of emotions that a young child in Kashmir (or any child in today’s war-torn world) might experience. That of despair, uncertainty and helplessness. Krishna Bala Shenoi’s illustrations are wonderful and evocative and bring the story to life.
Will Sajad learn to tame the fearsome beast (metaphorically his anger) and find inner peace? Make yourself a cup of nun chai (or kahwa, if you please) and pick up this book to find out.”

How To Draw Cartoon Characters With Ajit Narayan for 6-8 years (64 pages). This book can be ordered from Scholastic India via our kbc storefront as well. Vandana has shared her daughter’s review and some inside pages here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts: “This book turned out to be an amazing add-on to my drawing skills!
The book explains how cartoon characters are built from simple shapes like circles and ovals. At first I thought it would be too easy, but it actually helped me understand how cartoon faces work, especially how to place features and make expressions look cuter and more lively. The examples are very clear, and the pages are not confusing at all.
My favorite part was learning how to draw different ages—babies, teens, and adults—just by changing the shape of the face or the size of the eyes. I tried the “Teenager” lesson, and the drawing I made at the end (the last picture) turned out really well! It was fun trying a totally different style from my usual anime drawings.
This book is great even if you already know how to draw. It gives you new ideas and techniques that you can add to your own style. Now I feel more confident mixing cartoon features with my anime art, and I want to try making my own cartoon characters too.”

However, along with friends come lots of drama- forming groups, fights, being judged. Wall friends club is a unique book that deals with all these topics, not through the regular chapters but through letters! A child develops a friendship with another child, by communicating through letters kept in a hole in a tree near the school. They share their daily life, problems with friends, with other people eventually joining their wall friends club. The kids learn about each other’s socio economic background, and answer questions about what are the important things in life – friends, material, education, outward show, judging others?

A Patch Of Sun, A Patch Of Shade by Vidya Nesarikar for 8-12 years (160 pages) – asian book award finalist. This book can be ordered from Scholastic India via our kbc storefront as well. Preeti has shared her daughter Ayesha’s review in the kbc fb group here. Excerpts:
“This middle-grade novel is set against the backdrop of a beautiful coffee estate in India. The story follows Champa, the daughter of a coffee estate owner. Champa has vitiligo, a skin condition that makes her feel self-conscious, so she stops going to school to avoid the stares and questions from others.
Into this world comes Lalli, a young girl who arrives at the Murari coffee estate with her parents during the coffee-picking season. Lalli misses her home deeply and feels out of place in this new environment. Slowly, an unexpected friendship blossoms between Champa and Lalli, bringing warmth, comfort, and a sense of belonging to both of them.
Vidya Nesarikar’s writing is simple, clear, and very easy to follow. She uses everyday language that feels natural, almost like listening to a friend tell a story. This makes the book accessible to children while still engaging for older readers.
Her descriptions of the coffee estate—the rustling leaves, the smell of coffee beans, the play of sunlight and shade—create a vivid atmosphere. The prose is gentle and lyrical, helping readers feel the rhythm of nature and the emotions of the characters.
Strengths of the Book:
• Relatable characters: Children and adults alike can connect with Champa’s insecurities and Lalli’s longing for home.
• Emotional depth: The book deals with sensitive issues like self-esteem in a gentle, hopeful way.
• Atmospheric setting: The coffee estate adds beauty to the story.
• Positive message: It teaches readers to value kindness, empathy, and the beauty of differences.
A Patch of Sun, A Patch of Shade is a tender, heartwarming story that balances light and shadow—just like its title suggests. Vidya Nesarikar succeeds in showing that life’s beauty lies in both sunshine and shade, in both joy and struggle.”

Home To Haunt by Sudeshna Shome Ghosh, illustrated by Pankaj Saikia for 8-12 years (144 pages). Mandira has reviewed this book here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts:
“A Home to Haunt reads like the kind of delightfully chaotic conversation I’d have with my unhinged school friends—equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and just the right amount of spooky.
At the centre is Poltu, a wonderfully endearing protagonist who suddenly finds himself tasked with helping ghosts find new homes. His only guide? A cryptic list of instructions that’s about as useful as a grocery list scrawled in the middle of the night.
Thankfully, Poltu isn’t on his own. He’s joined by the ever-cheerful Surjo-da—who, minor detail, happens to be a ghost himself. The two set off on what might be called an adventure-of-a-lifetime (if you can still call it that when one of you is already dead), meeting a parade of quirky, lovable spirits along the way.
The book is filled with funny moments and gentle nostalgia—from the Bong “daak” names to familiar Kolkata landmarks and food references (though I did miss a scones in the tea scene!). And the illustrations by Pankaj Saikia? Just phenomenal. They don’t just complement the story—they elevate it. Haunting in the best way.
Will Poltu crack the clues and fulfill his mission? Maybe.
Will you have fun following him on this strange, sweet ride? Absolutely.”

Submerged Worlds and Other Amazing Stories of India’s Mighty Rivers by Vaishali Shroff | Melting Glaciers, Urban Flooding, Dams, River Rights, Destruction, Revival and more | Ages 13 +. Mandira has shared her review in the kbc fb group here. Quoting her: “It is certainly not easy to write complex themes and make them simple. It is certainly not easy to address the various nuances of the subject and yet keep it readable and not dry and boring. And neither is it easy to separate the wheat from the chaff when there are so many angles to a subject so vast and complex as the rivers of India.
Kudos to Vaishali for doing just that!
Submerged Worlds examines the ecological toll of sand mining, river interlinking, and unchecked development, while also capturing the resilience and resolve of those striving to protect these fragile ecosystems.
With each byte sized chapter with amazing names, Vaishali Shroff takes readers down an immersive journey along India’s rivers. Through this journey, the reader gets a window into the culture, ecology, and community of the people — how they benefit, how they are impacted and how they endure.
This is a well-researched and beautifully written book that explores a range of themes: environmental concerns, historical and cultural context, and the human impact. Yet it delivers its insights with a simplicity and clarity that can only come from a good, seasoned and passionate storyteller.”

Solar System Activity Book for 7 years+ (88 pages) published by Scholastic. This book can be ordered from Scholastic India via our kbc storefront as well. Scholastic India always has special offers on.
Mahima’s 8 yo son has reviewed this activity book. She has shared inside pages and the review here in the kbc fb group. Excerpts: “When I received this book I was so happy and intrigued. I sat with the book and grabbed a pencil almost immediately. Also this is my first book that is activity based on the Solar System. I went through each page and I loved it so much. The book has so many puzzles, mazes, matching the right ones, patterns and also information about our Solar Members. A little bit of Math, a little bit of science and loads of fun. You now some pages had bamboozled, if that’s the word I can use for myself.
I still have way more pages to solve, I don’t go in an order. I just randomly pick an activity and do it, it’s really fun that way. The information, activity about Mars on Pg 31 and it’s rovers that’s something I enjoyed doing. Did you know Jupiter has some faint gas rings which are almost invisible, I didn’t know that too until now after I read it in this book on Pg 38. By the way do you know where else do arouras form other than on our Planet…. Now wear your thinking hats and think awayyyyy.”
Mahima’s perspective: “As a parent I knew how keen my child is to know more about everything beyond the sky. I have only seen his curiosity grow heaps and bounds, so this book came perfectly in time to keep our boring holiday afternoons exciting. While most activities were solved by him on his own there are a few we solved together. What really made the difference is the excitement in his voice every time he solved a puzzle or read a new fact from this book was what thrilled me about it. “Amma..did you know?” That’s how he would shout out to me from wherever he was. So, now you know why this particular book should be a part of your space enthusiastic child.”
FOCUSED MINDS by Gauranga Darshan Das for 10 years+ . This book can be ordered from Scholastic India via our kbc storefront as well. Scholastic India always has special offers on.
Preeti has posted her 12 yo’s brilliant review in the kbc fb group here with inside pages. Excerpts:
“Will a 10/11 year old want to read Bhagwad Gita. I suppose it won’t sound interesting to anyone. Here comes a rescue!
Focused Minds! is more than just a motivational read—it’s a vibrant yet motivational book for young learners (and the young at heart) seeking clarity in a world full of “sneaky” distractions (my biggest weakness). Gauranga Darshan Das, known for his engaging spiritual storytelling, blends ancient wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita with modern-day challenges faced by students, gamers, and budding artists alike. (POV- I have spoken almost every sloka from this book in our school assembly).
The book is structured around relatable scenarios—like preparing for a math Olympiad or mastering a musical instrument—and uses them as springboards to explore the power of concentration.
What makes it stand out is its interactive approach: each chapter includes practical exercises, reflective questions, and bite-sized lessons that encourage readers to apply focus as a real-life superpower.
However, it’s not a book that can be read in one go neither is it a single read. It’s a book that has to be read at intervals and re-read. It talks on very complex topics like desires & emotions, Ego, Concentration & Foucus, Mind Control and the use of Smart gadgets. To make it interesting the author has included small stories which makes these topic easy to understand. All these topics have been explained and talked about in a a easy to read manner talking first about the problem and then also giving solutions- Solutions which can be easily implemented.
I liked the chapter “Power of concentration” the most as I could now relate with my mother’s dialogue “Hum logon ka concentration bahut zyada tha. Improve yours too. Its very important” Every chapter in this book has a “Takeway from the lesson” and “Try this out” which enhances the connectivity with readers. A special mention for the lovely illustrations by Charbak Dipta which adds charm to the book and makes it more welcoming to read.
Verdict: A must-read for students, educators, and anyone looking to sharpen their mental clarity. It’s a beautiful fusion of timeless philosophy and everyday relevance—perfect for your bookshelf or classroom toolkit.”
