For me, workbook would mean completing the whole page, write where required etc. Ishani did not want to write. So, I reminded myself that my purpose of doing this workbook was to ensure she comprehends what she reads. Since then we have been doing the workbook orally whenever she does not feel like writing. No pressure! No forcing! Reading is a pleasure for us; the pressure would make it a compulsion which would probably change her equation with books!

Getting our children to practice writing can be difficult if writing is not made appealing and creative enough. No child wants to write the same words / lines again. I ordered this bloomsbury activity book, thinking I would show neil how to write a story. But, being dino obsessed, he wanted to write the story himself. The format of the book is superb- it gives the kids the first line, and the surrounding imagery, and thereafter the kids are free to pick 4 stickers to continue their story. How to Get a Grip on Grammar Achira recommends this for 6-8 years.
How to get a grip on grammar by Simon Cheshire and illustrated by Kate Pankhurst. A cute little book on all the nuances of grammar. Covers the basics like nouns,pronouns, verbs, adjectives and so on. But what I found most interesting is the punctuation part. Lovely chapters that come with many examples and exercises to practice. There is a section on grammatical errors which is short and explains the very basic errors that we often come across. The book is very concise, to the point and good to have as a handbook for grammar. The illustrations are very cute and make it fun to read.

We have been doing a lot of maths and activities. Adu doesn’t like the traditional way of studying. So I get a lot of books which have these lovely activities and make learning fun.
Hidden Pictures Puzzles Volume 4– This one is pure gem to keep the kids engaged for hours. You have to find the things hidden in the big picture and colour them. Increases concentration and can be fun when done together. (other volumes are available in the series as well).
Nick and Nack See the Stars (Highlights Puzzle Readers) for 4-7 years (32 pages)
Mental Mathematics by S. Chand’s for Class 1– This book is indeed very cool for making kids practice their math skills. I found it very relevant to what Adu has been learning in school and the mental fun drills surely make maths fun. Being a fan of maths I always want to make it a fun subject for the kids so that they never find it hard and stressful. Am very happy with this buy. (There are other books for different classes as well.)
Mental Maths by Andrew Brodie – Ages 6-7 years – Again a perfect book to practice maths in a fun way. Lots of practice sheets for addition and subtraction. Also a couple on time which they have been doing in class. (this series is available for other age groups as well)
English Grammar by Om Books – Workbook 1– A very simple book with lots of engaging worksheets. Jumbled words, opposites, word search and perfect introduction to grammar. (There are other workbooks for different ages in this series)
Science workbook by Moonstone Publishers Level 1 -I got it because I loved the content but we are yet to start this. We are hooked to our maths books. (Again, this series comes in different Levels for different age groups)
