A Beautiful Reminder That Being Different is Wonderful!

When I first saw the title, I’ll admit I was curious—a poison garden in a kids’ book? But this isn’t about anything scary. It’s about something much more important: helping our kids stay true to themselves even when the world tells them to fit in.

Meet Millie Fleur, who moves to Garden Glen—a neighborhood where every house looks identical, every lawn is the same, and everyone does things exactly alike. Then comes Millie with her wonderfully wild garden full of unusual plants. Her neighbors don’t know what to make of it. They judge it. They call it unruly and strange.

There’s a page where Millie faces that judgment, and I had to pause. Because isn’t this the conversation we’re constantly having with our kids? “Why don’t they like what I like?” “Why do they think I’m different?” As parents, we know our children will face these moments their entire lives—we face them too. This book gives us language to talk about it.

Millie doesn’t change who she is to please everyone else. She believes in her garden, and through her confidence and resilience, something wonderful happens.

This is a book for you if your child is:

  • Navigating new social dynamics
  • Questioning their choices because they’re different from their friends
  • Naturally creative or quirky and sometimes feeling self-conscious about it
  • Learning that it’s okay to stand out

This book opens the door to those tricky conversations about staying true to yourself, even when it’s uncomfortable. It doesn’t promise that everyone will immediately understand you, but it shows that when you believe in yourself, others often follow.
