One Little Shoe, A World Of Wonder — And The Collective Nouns We Never Knew!
Cast your mind back to those school days when we were frantically memorizing collective nouns before an exam. How many do you actually remember now? When I picked up Falguni Gokhale’s A Zany Book of Collective Nouns, I was humbled to realize I could only recall a handful — and my husband was in the same boat! There were even quite a few I had never come across before. And that right there tells you why this book deserves a special spot on your little one’s bookshelf.
But here’s what I want every parent in this community to know — this is so much more than an English lesson.
At its heart, this vibrant, colorful book takes you on the most delightful journey, following “Red” — a little shoe — as it travels and encounters different groups of animals and birds along the way. Each group reacts to Red with curiosity, but in their own wonderfully unique way. The monkeys? Busy playing! The owls? Coolly unbothered. The tigers? Lazily stretching and watching from a distance. Through these charming narratives, beautifully brought to life through gorgeous illustrations, the author subtly teaches our little ones about individual animal traits and behaviors — sparking those wonderful “why does a tiger do that, Mama?” conversations we all treasure.
What I particularly love is the gentle message woven throughout about togetherness. Each species moves and lives as a group, yet every group is beautifully different. And yet, despite all those differences, every single one of them shares that same sense of wonder and curiosity toward Red. It’s a lesson in both unity and diversity that I think is so valuable for little hearts and minds to absorb early on.
The rhyming scheme makes reading aloud an absolute joy — my toddler was giggling and chiming in to complete my sentences. And all of this comes naturally wrapped around the learning of collective nouns. Did you know a group of owls is called a parliament? I certainly didn’t before my toddler and I discovered it together in these pages!
And just when you think the fun is over? Surprise! The book has more magic waiting at the end — a fun family game and extra pages packed with collective nouns for those wonderfully curious little minds who always want to know more and more.
This book truly lives up to every bit of its zany title, and as a parent who is always on the lookout for books that educate while they entertain, this one gets my whole heart. Grab it for your little ones — you’ll be learning right alongside them, and honestly? That’s the most beautiful part.
