Stinkypur Guardians is a beautifully written story that follows two young girls, Jhalak and Nami. Set in Nala Park – a well known neighborhood park that is home to several bird species such as lapwings, storks, ibises and peacocks. The narrative unfolds around a space that is both cherished and neglected. While the park is frequented by walkers and children at play, an unmaintained canal running through it carries garbage and filth leaving the area unpleasantly odorous. The children jokingly refer to it as their “Stinkypur Kingdom”.
The turning point comes when the girls witness a lapwing entangled in a plastic waste, struggling to free itself. Without hesitation Jhalak steps into the slimy, foul-smelling water to rescue the bird. Though repulsed by the stench and the muck she remains determined. The incident sparks a realization among the children that the canal’s condition cannot be ignored. They begin mobilizing support and gathering volunteers to clean it up.
Just as their efforts gain momentum, they are shaken by the sight of a notice board announcing that the park has been closed to public and taken over by a property developer. The girls are outraged. What follows is their journey of courage and conviction as they attempt to reclaim and revive their beloved park.
The story thoughtfully addresses significant themes such as environmental awareness, empathy, civic responsibility and youth led change. It highlights an important truth: while many of us feel strongly about issues, few take action. Through Jhalak and Nami, young readers are encouraged not just to hope for a change but to be one.
The author subtly references real-life environmental activists such as Greta Thunberg, Ridhima Pandey, providing meaningful touchpoints for parents and educators to introduce children to contemporary eco-warriors and inspire further discussion.
After reading the book, I had a truly heartfelt conversation with my daughter. She has always been a nature lover, but it was incredibly touching to see her thoughtfully understand and analyze the issue in her own way. With the perspective and awareness that she has as a 7 year old, she came up with the sweetest little ideas and solutions.
Watching her reflect so sincerely and express her thoughts with such empathy was a deeply proud moment for me as a parent.
At 80 pages, the book is well-suited for independent readers. The language is simple and accessible, and the story is complemented by selective illustrations that highlight key moments. Overall, Stinkypur Guardians is a timely and impactful read – particularly relevant in an era when the world continues to grapple with climate change.
