Overview
A Hoysala Adventure is an amazing historical tale that takes us back to the year 1185 CE, during the time of the powerful Hoysala Empire in South India. The story follows a brave young girl named Devaki, who sets out on a dangerous journey to deliver an important message to the king. Her mission is not just about duty—it’s about courage, family, and standing up for what’s right.
Main Character: Devaki
Devaki is not just a typical heroine. She’s young, but she’s smart, determined, and full of heart. Her father, Pemma Virappa, is sick, and he’s supposed to collect taxes for the king. Since the royal postal system has failed and bandits are everywhere, Devaki decides to travel herself to the capital Dwarasamudra (modern-day Halebidu) to inform the king.
Along the way, she meets pilgrims, faces dangers, and uncovers a secret plot involving a royal kidnapping and a rebellion. Her journey takes her through real historical places like Shravanabelagola, Belur, and Barakuru, making the story feel alive and authentic.
What Makes the Book Special
- Historical Setting: The book beautifully brings the Hoysala era to life. You can almost see the dusty roads, grand temples, and bustling towns.
- Strong Female Lead: Devaki is a great role model—brave, thoughtful, and full of spirit. (As a girl, I love books with girls as the main lead.)
- Adventure + History: It’s not just a history lesson. There are mystery, action, and emotion. (Wish a movie gets made of the book.)
- Cultural Richness: The story reflects the traditions, beliefs, and social life of 12th-century India. (Something which I truly like about India.)
- Relation with class 7 History: This book had familiar terms and the concept of an empire which actually was a chapter in my midterm exams allowing me to relate further.
Writing Style
The language is simple and easy to follow, perfect for young readers or anyone new to historical fiction. The author uses vivid descriptions to paint scenes, but sometimes the middle part of the book slows down with too many details. Still, the story picks up again with exciting twists and a satisfying ending
Illustrations
The Illustrations of the book add value to it making it interesting to read and imagine the story.
Themes Explored
- Courage and Responsibility: Devaki steps up when no one else can.
- Family Bonds: Her love for her father drives her actions.
- Social Roles: The book shows how girls were expected to behave—and how Devaki breaks those rules.
- Political Intrigue: There’s a deeper layer of rebellion and royal secrets that adds suspense.
Why Should You Read It?
If you enjoy stories that mix real history with adventure, this book is a great pick. It’s also a wonderful way to learn about a lesser-known part of Indian history—the Hoysala dynasty—through the eyes of a relatable young girl. Teachers and students can use it as a companion to history lessons, and parents will appreciate its values and storytelling.
Final Thoughts
A Hoysala Adventure is more than just a children’s book. It’s a window into India’s rich past, told through a story that’s exciting, emotional, and inspiring. Whether you’re 12 or 42, Devaki’s journey will stay with you. This book celebrates the “The Girls of India”. Three cheers for the Girl Power.
